Storm Smart is kicking off its inaugural “End-of-Hurricane-Season Celebration and Bahama Relief Fundraiser” on Fort Myers Beach.
The celebration will include:
- A First Responders Gratitude Party on Wednesday, November 27
th, from 4 to 8 p.m. atthe Yucatan Beach Stand Bar & Grill (250 Old San Carlos Blvd.) Attendees will be able to thank local first responders and military personnel who put their lives in danger to protect the community every year. The event will feature live entertainment, a 20% discount for first responders and military personnel, and a hurricane-flag-burning rehearsal.
- The Fort Myers Beach Premiere of Matt Dean’s documentary, “The Old Man and the Sea – Return to Cuba,” also on Wednesday, November 27
th, at 7:30 p.m. atthe Lighthouse Resort Inn and Suites (1051 Fifth Street.) The film was the winner of the 2018 Key West Film Fest’s ‘Best Florida Feature Film.’ It depicts Supreme Commander and First Sea Lord Admiral Finbar’s extraordinary seafaring life and follows him aboard the beloved Flagship WOLF — the oldest working schooner in Florida — to Cuba in 2016. This marked his first trip to Havana in 50 years.
- An Official End-of-Hurricane-Season Celebration on Saturday, November 30
th, from 4 to 8 p.m. atthe Yucatan Beach Stand Bar & Grill. At 5 p.m. The time-honored Key West tradition, “End-of-Hurricane-Season Burning of the Hurricane Flags,” will affirm the official end of the 2019 hurricane season.
All events are free, open to the public, and will feature live entertainment and drink specials.
Proceeds and donations for these events will go to WavesofChange.org — a campaign of the International Ocean Institute — and the WOLF, as Finbar and his wife, Julie, sail to the Bahamas to help rebuild Green Turtle Cay.
Attendees can further support their mission, Peace Vision Bahama Relief Sails, by bringing new/used hand tools to any of the above events. These will aid in the Finbars’ efforts to rebuild homes and businesses in the Bahamas that were impacted by Hurricane Dorian. Southwest Floridians and visitors can also make donations directly to WavesofChange.org/flagship-wolf.
