An interview with Dr. April Brown, Quality Counseling Services

What do you do professionally?

Business 5 in 5 with Dr. April Brown

I’m a licensed mental health counselor. I work in relationship and sex therapy. And, I’m also a certified sex therapist.

In Cape Coral?

Yes, in Cape Coral. And I also have an office in Fort Myers. There, we have a variety of other counselors who also provide therapy services.

How did you get into this business?

I’m a numbers person, so I started off in finance and accounting and worked as an accountant for a big corporation, but it was kind of boring. It was the same old thing every month, every month, every month. I was just kind of getting bored with that and I was having a baby at the time, so I took some time off.

I’m a very spiritual person, so I prayed about it and did some community service. I felt like I was called to be a counselor. Actually, my grandmother was the first high school counselor in South Carolina.

I went back to college to learn about school counseling. But while I was there, I actually got a degree in mental health counseling. And so that’s what got me into the field. I worked as a school counselor and mental health counselor and one day started my own private practice.

How do you gauge success in your practice day today?

I gauge success as an internal thing. I am successful if I feel like I have provided insight, have helped people, have done what I felt like my higher powers told me to do and if I felt like I’ve been productive.

Also on the maybe practical side, I do set goals and I’m successful if I feel like I’m moving toward those goals. Not necessarily that the goal is completed, but that I’ve made some progress. Because I know life happens.

Can you think of a situation that you would consider very successful in the outcome?

Yes. Just starting off, it was only me and myself, you know? And now reaching to where I have – I think there’s like 10 or 12 people underneath me now – that’s been a success.

But it’s not only been success about me. I helped many of my interns develop their own private practice. I see success when I see I’ve helped or planted the seed and I’ve seen it grow in someone else. That makes me feel successful.

What’s on the horizon for you and your practice and therapy in the next five years?

Business 5 in 5 with Dr. April Brown

Well, I feel like in this area, and in the mental health world, I know a lot of like-minded professionals. And so what I see for my practice is to branch out in the field. In working with a lot of different couples and individuals, I see we’re losing connection with each other, because of so much social media and other digital usage. So I think it’s really helpful, whether it’s in therapy or whether it’s through other avenues of self-development, to help people get back to the basics of learning how to connect.

That’s my goal in doing my podcast, bringing intimacy back. The newest thing that I’m doing is called couples retreat vacation counseling.
