CBD oil is popping up in everything, from coffee to make-up to dog treats, and available seemingly everywhere, from the grocery store to the street corner. More than 1,500 new CBD products have come to the market in the last three years, according to the National Products Association in Washington, D.C.
Is it any wonder that consumers are confused?
There’s a big
difference between CBD as a trend and CBD oil as an important new
supplement with positive therapeutic results. Because CBD is
currently unregulated, some so-called CBD products have little to no
CBD in them.
The Food and Drug Administration
evaluated CBD products in 2015 and 2016 and found that 22 out of 24
products did not have the levels of CBD advertised on their label.
Furthermore, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical
Association in 2017 showed 70% of CBD products do no match their
label. The safety and efficacy of CBD products has become a prevalent
concern, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began hearings at
the end of May on how to assess CBD products and regulate the
CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is the
ingredient in marijuana and hemp thought to have medicinal benefits.
Hemp is a plant that has been used for centuries by many cultures for
healing, and unlike marijuana, hemp-derived oil offers a unique
ration of cannabinoids that are non-euphoric. In other words,
hemp-derived CBD will not make you high. As a result, this form of
CBD oil is available over the counter without a medical marijuana
The benefits of CBD use relates to the
Endocannabinoid System (ECS), made up of receptors that act as
messengers to give your body specific directions in regulating
anxiety, appetite/hunger, depression, immune function, memory, mood,
motor control, pain, pleasure and reward, reproduction and fertility,
sleep and temperature. Endocannabinoids are the chemical messengers
that tell your body to get these processes moving.
If your body does not produce enough
endocannabinoids or cannot regulate them properly, you are
susceptible to illnesses. External sources like CBD can help to
balance and maintain the ECS by binding to receptors, providing
therapeutic benefits as well as helping regenerate cells and brain
The effects of CBD
oil are not instant. Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is
different, and it can take up to several weeks for CBD to work.
The amount of CBD oil in a product will
have a direct effect on its efficacy, and the methods used to
manufacture CBD oil impact the safety and quality of products you
might buy. When used properly, cannabinoids can be as effective as
prescription medications with fewer side effects.
Just because something is labeled as
containing hemp doesn’t mean it includes CBD oil. Hemp seeds
contain extremely low levels of CBD. Hemp seed products can be a
great source of nutrition, but they are often inadequate for creating
CBD benefits. Look for products that specifically list the level of
CBD instead of terms like “hemp concentrate” or “hemp extract.”
Hemp plants are bioaccumulators, which
means they pull contaminants found in soil. Plants could be grown
with the use of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizer,
therefore it’s key to check that products have been tested for
heavy metals, mold, mildew, fungus, yeast, bacteria and other harmful
It’s more important than ever to find

products by Ananda Hemp and PlusCBD Oil, which are tested to ensure
quality and consistency. You can get a certificate of analysis on
company websites for each product created by a third-party lab that
shows active cannabinoids, as well as any chemicals or other
